OBJECTIVES

UK Charities must prepare their accounts in the format stipulated by law which for most charities means applying the requirements laid down by the charity SORP. The latest SORP 2015 sets out significant disclosure requirements which charities must comply with. Key issues that need to be addressed in the financial statements of most charities include references to key risks faced by the charity; explanations about the charity’s reserves position is also a SORP disclosure requirement, as are statements about “going concern”.

Charities must ensure that they are conversant with these requirements and understand how to obtain the relevant information needed and present the information appropriately in their financial statements.

This Charities Accounts – Preparing SORP course covers the main requirements of the SORP, providing illustrations and a case study to demonstrate key treatments required by the SORP. The case study will enable delegates to appreciate the work needed to be done before the financial statements can be finalised; and will also help those with responsbilities for the finance function and financial reporting to ensure that they have adequate systems in place to enable the financial statements to be prepared efficiently.

Delegates will leave the course with a greater understanding of SORP requirements; how to present the trustees’ annual report; the importance of the statement of financial activities, and how to deal with key issues such as solvency and going concern.
