Internal Audit Fundamentals Part 1 – The Essentials

This Internal Audit Fundamentals Part 1 – The Essentials training course is the first part of a modular three-day programme. We recommend attending all three days but each day is self-contained and can be taken separately.

On this first day, we explore the background and theory to internal auditing and then show delegates how to plan and conduct an audit in practice.  In terms of the theory, the framework provided by the Institute of Internal Auditors is used throughout, including the core principles of internal auditing.  In terms of the practical application, this course takes delegates through the end to end process of an internal audit: from the planning stage, through execution (including audit documentation and sampling techniques), and finally to effective delivery and the internal audit report.  The course is highly interactive throughout, combining practical tips and advice with quizzes and audit scenario exercises.

Internal Audit Fundamentals Part 2 – Controls, Governance and Assurance

This Internal Audit Fundamentals Part 2 – Controls, Governance and Assurance training course is the second part of a modular three-day programme.  Although we recommend attending all three days, each day can be taken separately. This part of the programme focuses on the crucial assurance aspects of the work that internal auditors carry out and addresses both the theory and the practice of internal controls. Delegates will learn how auditors can add value to their organisation’s governance by carrying out work in the areas of fraud prevention and detection and culture and business ethics.  The course is highly interactive throughout, combining practical tips and advice with quizzes and audit scenario exercises.

Internal Audit Fundamentals Part 3 – Risk, Value for Money and Operational Auditing

This Internal Audit Fundamentals Part 3 – Risk, Value for Money and Operational Auditing course is the third part of a modular three-day programme. Although we recommend attending all three days, each day is self-contained and can be taken separately. This part of the programme looks at the remaining areas of the internal audit remit – risk, operational auditing and consulting activities.

It addresses the key area of risk management, raising delegates’ awareness of what is meant by the term ‘risk’, how organisations seek to manage their risk and the role of internal auditors in the risk management framework.  Delegates will learn how internal auditors can prioritise their work most efficiently by taking a risk-based approach. The course then explores the area of operational auditing and looks at two demanding internal audit challenges: value-for-money auditing and auditing the supply chain. The course is highly interactive throughout, combining practical tips and advice with quizzes and audit scenario exercises.

International Tax Planning – Part 1

International tax planning is an essential discipline for UK groups operating internationally, especially in the light of recent reforms such as the CFC rules, the Foreign Branch Exemption, the Patent Box, revisions to the Exit Tax rules for companies and the General Anti-Avoidance rules. The OECD project on Base Erosion and Profit Shifting heralds the start of a new era in international co-operation on anti-avoidance. The International Tax Planning – Part 1 course is an introduction covering how international tax planning has an important role to play in the structuring of a UK group’s foreign operations and how the new BEPS climate will impact on existing and upcoming cross-border structures.

At the end of the course participants will be aware of the principal UK and foreign tax rules relating to outbound investment and the application of these rules. It will also cover the consequent planning opportunities, current and anticipated anti-avoidance rules and the need to co-ordinate the UK and foreign tax plan.

International Tax Planning – Part 2

This International Tax Planning – Part 2 training course will concentrate on cross-border planning techniques for outward investment and will consider the UK and host country tax implications involved, including Europe, the USA and the Far East. The implications of BEPS and the EU Anti Avoidance Tax Directive on existing and upcoming cross-border structures will be considered, including the extent to which these recommendations and directives have been, and are likely to be, implemented into UK and foreign tax legislation.

The City of London continues to maintain its position as a focal point for the world’s financial markets and is home to the UK’s financial services industry.

This entry level programme is designed for both new entrants into finance and those who new to the City and financial markets. We assume delegates are new and unfamiliar with the financial services industry.

We will attempt to de-mystify the jargon, discuss financial services providers including banking, insurance, fund management, and explain what they do, why and how the key financial markets work.

No prior knowledge is assumed.

A practical, example-led course introducing delegates to tax accounting under UK GAAP. The course will build understanding by developing the initial concepts of tax accounting, including current and deferred tax, through worked examples. The focus of the course is to enable delegates to fully complete tax accounting calculations for a UK based company. The Introduction to UK GAAP Tax Accounting course will be based on tax accounting principles under FRS 102.

IR35 and the private sector

Businesses which use the services of freelancers who operate through a Personal Service Company have a big decision to make over the coming months.

From April 2020, medium and large companies, as defined by the terms of the Companies Acts, will have to operate the “IR35” rules, (more correctly the “intermediaries legislation”), in cases where they form the opinion that, in the absence of their PSC, the individual providing their services to the business would be an employee of the company.

The “Off-Payroll” legislation applicable to the Public Sector since April 2017 seems to have proved a fairly robust set of rules and the new regime applicable in the private sector from April 2020 is looking similar.

Businesses will need to prepare thoroughly and decide on their approach. Preparation is going to be key and identifying the key individuals in the organisation who are going to have to cope with this problem and ensuring they are properly prepared, trained up and informed about the new rules is a serious issue facing many business over the coming months.

We are dedicated to empowering Finance and HR professionals in providing them with the key skills and knowledge they need to operate to best practice standards in UK and to manage a global workforce.

Islamic Finance

This Islamic Finance training course covers the key concepts and principles underpinning Islamic Finance and the market practices and key products coming out of the Islamic Finance industry. Delegates will learn the practical application of the modes of finance/transaction types,  the Sharia and legal underpinnings.

As a pre-cursor to looking at transaction types and practices this course will include discussions on a world without interest and adherence to the other prohibitions and principles – how would financiers and those needing finance interact, what would a potential banking model look like and what sort of activity, outside of lending on interest (prevalent in the conventional world) would not be allowed within the Islamic Finance industry?

Major Differences in UK/US/IFRS Financial Reporting

The course evaluates the main accounting differences between UK, US and IFRS GAAPs, using IFRS as the central point for comparisons.  It will enable delegates to identify the key differences and the major issues when moving from UK or US rules to IFRS.
