Developing Your Role as a Housing Association Board Member

COURSE OBJECTIVES:This practical, inter-active workshop aims to help participants understand and develop their role as a Board member. It will focus on roles and responsibilities (what Boards should do), and how Board members can develop their effectiveness.


By the end of the day, participants will have a good understanding of the roles and responsibilities of Board members, and how they can improve their effectiveness as Board members.


COURSE CONTENT

  • The essential functions of the Board: purpose, values, strategic objectives, role in relation to CEO/MD, financial role, delegation and control, risk management (‘what’ the Board does)

  • The framework around governance: the Regulator, the Codes, legal liabilities and probity

  • How to carry out those roles most effectively: contributing to long-term strategy, monitoring and driving improvement, appropriate challenge and support, active management of risk, control and assurance

  • How to handle the paperwork, and contribute effectively in meetings

  • How to sustain good relationships between the Board and the Executive, the residents and external stakeholders

  • Building the Board teamwork, and review and improvement

WHO SHOULD ATTEND


This workshop is designed for non-executive Board members of housing associations. It is appropriate for new Board members, for people with more experience who want to develop their skills further, and for executive directors.

Liz Potter is an independent consultant, working with a wide range of housing and other social purpose organisations. She specialises in governance, strategy and leadership, working with boards and executive teams. She is an experienced and qualified executive coach, working with directors, chief executives and chairs. Liz is Chair of Orbit Group and has worked in housing for over thirty years. She previously worked at national level as Director of Policy at the National Housing Federation. She actively supports initiatives to promote more diverse leadership in housing.
