Tax and VAT Treatment of Travel, Entertainment and Staff Expenses

COURSE OBJECTIVES: This one-day course offers detailed, practical guidance on the recovery of VAT on expenses and the treatment of expenses for PAYE and NIC compliance purposes. It highlights areas where expenses have differing treatments for VAT and Tax, as well as areas of commonality.


COURSE CONTENT:


Specifically the course will cover:


  • Evidence for VAT recovery

  • Blocked input tax-cars, business entertaining and directors accommodation

  • VAT treatment of various staff costs

  • Tax relief by deduction or exemption

  • Tax treatment of common expenses

  • Reporting for PAYE and VAT

  • VAT inspections-how to deal with them

  • PAYE settlement agreements

  • The course will include separate exercises and a combined VAT/PAYE case study.

Tim Buss  Director, Tim Buss VAT Consultants Ltd
Tim has been involved with VAT since 1973. He joined HM Customs & Excise (“Customs”) in May 1973, shortly after the introduction of VAT in the UK. He worked as a visiting VAT inspector and as a classroom trainer. Tim left Customs in 1989 and joined accountants PKF as a VAT Consultant responsible for all aspects of VAT. He was appointed director of VAT in 1998. In October 2005, Tim left PKF to set up his own VAT consultancy and training company. In addition to presenting various training courses Tim is a consultant to a number of accountancy firms and other businesses. He has represented clients in a number of high profile VAT Tribunal cases. Tim regularly writes and lectures on a range of VAT topics. In 2005 he wrote a book on VAT and Property Transactions. He was a Council member and for three years was director of education of the Institute of Indirect Taxation. Tim remains an associate of the Institute.

Michael Evans Mike Evans is an Employment Taxes and CIS Consultant who specialises in Employment related issues and has been presenting training courses on P11D Expenses and Benefits issues for more than 20 years. Mike started his career in the Inland Revenue and was a Senior Corporate Inspector when he left in 1988 to work for three ’top ten’ Accountancy firms until becoming an independent Consultant in May 2006. Mike regularly presents courses for the AAT and ACCA and is an external trainer for Tolley’s Payroll Alliance, as well as Chairman of the Lexis Nexis Tolley Payroll Year End and Payroll Manager’s Review Conferences. Mike writes and lectures extensively on Employment Taxes and CIS matters and through MY Consultancy Mike provides consultancy advice and practical help to businesses of all sizes and to owner managed businesses, accountants and lawyers.
