Mergers and Acquisitions - An Introduction

COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course will cover the entire M&A process, from making the decision to pursue a growth strategy through to integration of the target. Case studies based on real life M&A activity will be used throughout the course to illustrate points.


Evidence suggests that less that half of corporate mergers deliver value for the buyers’ shareholders. To help understand this level of failure, the various managerial tasks involved in achieving a successful merger are discussed, including identifying targets, due diligence and negotiating the heads of agreement. The main focus of the course is private company acquisitions however a summary of the public company M&A rules will be given.

  • Approach and preliminary negotiations

  • Target investigation

  • Pricing the deal

  • The Sale and Purchase agreement
